Saying goodbye to 3rd grade

Posted: June 25, 2013 in School

June 17-June 19, 2013: I can’t believe how fast this school year has gone by and I can’t believe Z will be a 4th grader this fall. Seems like just yesterday he was a baby. 😦 I am so incredibly proud of Z! He gets amazing grades, loves to read and write, participated in an impromptu advanced math group, he was in leadership club, he did the morning school announcements one day each week, he was selected to be a speaker in leadership day and parent ed night, was a huge success in the talent show, helped during the cultural fair, he has completed another year/rank in Cub Scouts, and I am sure I have forgotten something in this list. He is truly growing up and finding his own interests. I love this kid so much!

June 17 – there was a huge party for all 3rd grade students starting at 2:30 until the end of the day. All the classrooms had different themes and the students were allowed to roam the halls to go to whichever class activity interested them. They had several rooms; a karaoke room, board games rooms, twister room, face painting room, crafts room, and the list goes on. I helped out in Z’s class but he left me hanging and chose to go to different rooms. I was quite sad that he didn’t want me around him – I guess I cramp his style these days. My friend, L, got a few pictures of Z playing twister. Thanks L!

June 18 – was the last day of school. They always hold an assembly on the last day of school where the marimba clubs play the marimba – super cool by the way, the choir sings, the kids get recognized for their different clubs, the kids advance to the next grade, the teachers get on stage and do a fun dance, then everyone watches as the 5th grades leave under an archway.

June 19 – was our official first day of summer. Z spent it on his new laptop and kindle. We had to take a break and had a surprise lunch with hubby at Panera.

Now wish me luck…..summer with a 9 year old and 4th grader is going to be a stressful one I am sure 🙂

There is no way Z is going to dance in this crowd. But he will dance on stage during the talent show. This kid.....

June 15, 2013: We decided it was time that Z learn to mow the yard. I mean when we were little we had a ton of chores – hard ones too. We decided Z has had it too easy so time to put him to work. I think he did a great job! Now we will see if he ever mows the yard again. 🙂

June 9, 2013: We went to an early dinner downtown Seattle with some friends and at at the Hard Rock Cafe. After dinner we decided to walk around Pike Street Market. We got to see them throw the fish but we got there as the market was closing shop. We were able to buy some wooden puzzles though. Z just loves those puzzles. After walking around we thought it would be a fun idea to go see the big old troll under the bridge. We took Z there when he was super tiny so of course he didn’t remember it. It was fun to finally show our friends something that they had never seen since it is usually the other way around. The troll under the bridge was built by a local artist and the troll is clutching a Volkswagen bug. I think it is pretty cool. What a great UNRAINY day in Seattle!

This is a real man. Pretty cool.

June Pack Meeting

Posted: June 25, 2013 in Cub Scouts

June 4, 2013: Our Pack had our last meeting for the school year by the lake. We had a huge party cookout. There were hotdogs, burgers, and veggie burgers and all the stuff to go with them. We even had smores. The kids got to run around playing and one of the leaders brought a tug of war rope – huge hit! I led the Pack in a few activities (including a silly marshmallow song) and introduced our new Cub Master. It was a perfect way to end the year!

June 3, 2013: So I was taking Z to school today and saw a free basketball goal at the end of our street. I thought it would be gone really fast so I called hubby to maybe get it. He was on his way to work and said heck no. So we dismissed the idea of getting this free goal. But when it was still there after school I thought maybe we could get it but hubby was at work. So I dismissed the idea again. But when hubby got home from work and it was still there, we decided that was a sign it was meant for us. So we get down to the end of the street to get it and as soon as he starts to haul it away, another car pulled up in hopes to get it. Boy did we get lucky. One minute later and it wouldn’t have been there for us to get. It was meant to be! I went and got a new net for it and a new ball for Z. Turns out Z absolutely loves to shoot hoops and can’t wait for his dad to come home from work everyday so they can play the made up game they play. Love it! Thank you neighbors!

Leadership day at school

Posted: June 20, 2013 in School

May 30, 2013: Our school is a Leader in Me school. Basically that means that the school practices the 7 habits of highly effective people. I really like what these 7 habits are teaching the kids. In order for our school to become a lighthouse school, there are 9 steps that has to be done and one of the steps is hold a leadership day each year. Z was asked to participate in leadership day this year. He participated in the parent education nights earlier this year and last school year but this is his first time to be part of the actual leadership day.  He was asked to prepare a presentation on one of the 7 habits – his choice – and to create a PowerPoint slide as well. He selected “synergy” and spoke about the time our Cub Scout Pack did the park clean up service project. He wrote the speech all by himself and created the slide too. He did an outstanding job presenting his topic to the whole school the day before leadership day and on the day of the event to over 100 people. The mayor and deputy mayor were in the audience as well an many community leaders and parents. Z spoke loud and proud and memorized his entire speech. He was even asked to introduce the leadership panel as well as the leadership notebooks. Z said he loves to speak in front of large groups and it shows!

The event made the local newspaper and they printed a picture of Z sharing his leadership notebook to one of the guests.

Spring school picture 2013

Posted: June 20, 2013 in School

May 2013: Z got back his spring school picture that he took the end of March. He told the photographer that I said he could wear his sunglasses in the photo. The photographer asked him if he was sure and took the picture. At first I was upset but now I think it is perfect. It is truly how he looks everyday anyway. He has very light eyes and always has on his glasses. Ya gotta love it!

May 26, 2013: T and her family came to town to celebrate K’s birthday. The party was at a roller skating rink. It was so much fun! I just love to roller skate! All the kids had so much fun and K was such a pretty birthday girl! Happy birthday sweetie!

After the party, everyone came to our house to spend the night. Z had a blast playing with the kids! T, K and I even got to slip away and get pedicures while the boys played street hockey. I just love it when we get to see T and her family!

May 24, 2013: We went to see a movie and eat lunch with some friends since there was no school on Friday. We also stopped off at my friend’s husband’s work so Z could see some of the Halo stuff. There as a lot of cool stuff to look at but I thought the full sized guy was pretty dang cool.
