March 2 – March 3, 2013: Z’s Cub Scout Pack went to an overnight camping trip to the zoo. They had the best time there! They learned about tons of animals and got to check the zoo out. They ate dinner there and they got to spend the night in the zoonasium. They got up early and had breakfast and got to check the zoo out some more before heading home. All in all, great weekend!

February 24, 2013: We had Z’s 9th birthday party at a very cool place called Lucky Strike. This is an upscale bowling alley, video arcade, pool, bar, etc. The boys got to bowl for an hour and while they bowled the waiter served them nonstop all their favorite foods: pizza, hotdogs, fries, chips, and soda. Once bowling was over, we moved to the arcade area where the waiter continued to serve them nonstop with the same food. Needless to say, these boys ate A TON! We had a huge 7 layer chocolate cake since that is Z’s favorite ever! Then he opened the most cool gifts then the boys took off to play unlimited video games for an hour. Although this place is expensive I highly recommend it as the people were top notch and so was the food. The party package = AWESOME! We were so glad that Z could share his birthday with some of his closest friends! And thank you to T for making the trip from Portland so C could be here with Z!

Check out the spread of food that they replenished the entire time we were there. It was all you can eat and then some....

February 25, 2013: Holy cow I can’t believe the time has gone by so fast that Z is now 9 years old! Where did the time go?!?! Happy 9th birthday to the most amazing kid I know! I love you so much and I am so very proud of you!

We put balloons in Z’s room while he sleeps the night before his birthday each year so this year was no different. He absolutely loves waking up to a room filled with balloons. This year the balloons started on the floor then once Z woke up, his daddy put them all on the ceiling. Dang it, I didn’t get a picture of them on the floor when he first woke up. No problem though, the kid keeps the balloons in his room until they the air is almost out of each of them or until I can’t take it anymore; which ends up being a month after his birthday. I am so glad he enjoys a balloon filled room. It is the little things….

Visiting family in Arizona

Posted: April 20, 2013 in Rewards, School, Vacation

February 17 – February 22, 2013: School was out for another winter break so Z and I went to visit my Dad in Arizona. The weather was fantastic as I am sure it was nasty and cold in WA. We always have the best time with my Dad and Stepmom and Z just loves visiting with them! We got to celebrate my niece’s birthday with her at a park with a bunch of her friends. Z got to play in the sand and on the play structure. At one point I looked over at him and he had on his jacket. I thought to myself “really kid -a jacket in AZ” but realized he must have been in the habit of wearing a jacket because it is always chili in WA. Anyway, we also got to celebrate Z’s birthday while we were there. My Dad arranged a party for Z at a super cool pizza place, Amazing Jakes, and all of his aunts, uncles, and cousins came to celebrate with him. He was on cloud 9 and was so surprised. (I kept it a secret from him.)

My Dad took Z to the Challenger Museum and the three of us went to the AZ Science Center and got to see the da Vinci Exhibit; which was super cool! Z got to pick oranges from my Dad’s trees and then Z and his Grandma juiced them all. He LOVED that job! He had so much fun juicing with Grandma! Z got to drive their golf cart on several occasions; he loves doing that! And we all played games every night. Oh, and I got to go to the casino one night and I just kept thinking I would win big eventually. Well, that didn’t happen; Instead, lost my freaking shorts!! Other than the casino trip, we had a lovely visit :-)!

February 10, 2013: Our Cub Scout Pack went to the Microsoft Store in the mall for a computer and video games clinic. We had a great turn out, 18 out of 19 boys went to the clinic. So yes, the store was full of scouts :). They each got either a laptop or the new surface to work on. The guy leading the clinic taught them tons of stuff about computers and video games. When the presentation was over each boy got a scavenger hunt list and got to go out into the store to search for clues. They had to use different computers and learn stuff about phones and video games. They had a blast. When it was over, Microsoft awarded every boy a Microsoft patch (very cool). Our Pack awarded every boy a computer and a video game beltloop at the following Pack meeting. What a fun day with fellow scouts! Thank you Microsoft for hosting us!

Biography Presentation

Posted: April 20, 2013 in School

February 10, 2013: Z had a biography poster and presentation due at school on February 11th and he chose Paul Revere to do his report on. We chose the book at our local library and Z had to write a presentation and create a poster with specific details. I think he did a great job on his poster and he knocked his presentation out of the park. He is very good at public speaking. His teacher was impressed with his presentation and even told him in all her years teaching nobody ever did a biography on Paul Revere. Even mom learned something new. Great job kiddo! I am so proud of you!

February 8, 2013: The answer is of course! Well, at least at Z’s school. You see the school does a cultural fair each year and invites families to make display boards and work a table for their country. This year the school decided to open the fair up to include some states so they asked me if I would participate. Of course I said yes because my husband is in love with the state in which he was born; Texas! So together we made a killer display board and had a few props. We were asked to serve a food from our state so we chose pecans since the pecan tree is the state tree. Well that didn’t go over well at all! Apparently these people wanted brisket. I can’t blame them really because Texas sure can make some yummy BBQ! But they had to deal with pecans since I am so swamped with Cub Scouts in my spare time – like there is any spare time right?

Z helped work the table and did a great job explaining things to the kids and he put stickers in their passports. He is such a great helper! But as soon as it was nearing the end of the evening, he took off to goof around with a couple buddies. They took my camera and took some of the silliest pictures ever. All in all, it was a fun night! Thanks Creekside for asking us to participate. Maybe next year we will come through with the beef since the display board is already made.

Blue and Gold 2013

Posted: April 15, 2013 in Birthdays, Cub Scouts

February 5, 2013: Our Cub Scout Pack celebrated Blue and Gold. What is Blue & Gold, and why do we have it you ask? The Boy Scouts of America was organized in February 1910, and the Cub Scouts were organized 20 years later, in 1930. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of BSA, was born on February 22, 1857. What better way is there to celebrate than have a party? Cub Scout packs everywhere celebrate by holding a Blue & Gold Banquet. In nearly all packs, the blue and gold banquet is one of the highlights of the year. It brings pack families together for a dinner and evening of fun.

We had a lovely dinner catered by Qdoba and the decoration theme was “pirate” for the event. The boys got to make pirate boat hats before the meeting and even got to do an activity page. We even ran a raingutter regatta race during the evening. Each boy built a Raingutter Regatta Trimaran Boat Kit during the evening and they got to race their boats. They had an absolute blast racing! Since I am the Committee Chair for our Pack, I made awards to hand out to each of our Pack leaders without them knowing about them. Each award was very clever and everyone seemed to like them. We had a great Pack meeting and had a great time at the birthday party! Happy Birthday BSA!
