Z gets a pocket knife!

January 9, 2013: We had a Cub Scout den meeting and the boys were going to learn about knives and they earn their whittling chip! I have to admit, I was nervous giving the boys knives and working with them. But we hosted the evening at our house and it was a longer meeting than normal. This meeting did not need to be rushed! All the parents were nervous too!

Before the boys got there, hubby had me make pocket knives out of cardboard and I put bright lipstick on the blade part of the knife. During hubby’s presentation about knives and knife safety, he gave each boy the cardboard pocket knife. He asked them to pretend it was real and open and close it as if it were sharp. After a few minutes passed, he asked the boys to put the cardboard knives down and hold up their hands. Of course they all were covered in lipstick. He then told them each of them would be in the emergency room with lots of cuts had those been real knives. Let me tell you, that lesson worked! By the time the parents handed over their real knives, the boys were much more respectful of the sharp instruments!

After they learned all they needed and said their pledge, the boys went to the garage to whittle on a bar of soap. They all did a great job and I was so proud of them all!

Once all the boys left, Z wanted some one on one time with daddy so they carved another bar of soap. Z did a great job! SO PROUD OF HIM!!!
