Pinewood Derby Time!

The day finally came for the pinewood derby, March 26, 2011. The pinewood derby is such a fun cub scout event! Each kid is supposed to make a car that will race in a competition against other cars; basically three cars race against each other. There are many ‘heats’ that the cars race in  and each car will race twice per lane (meaning 6 races per car). We had 50 cars entered in the pinewood derby this year. So that was a lot of racing!

At home, long before the race day, Z and his Dad had worked on making the perfect car. Z didn’t want a typical ‘car’ – he wanted something different from what anyone would bring. He wanted to make a SHARK CAR. So that is just what they did. It took some creative cutting and sanding to shape the plain rectangle piece of wood into a shark car. They had a great time painting it and putting on the fins. I think they did an amazing job! Everyone at the event thought Z’s car was the most original and it got a lot of great comments.  Although he didn’t win a trophy, he won the whole thing because of his winning attitude and cool looking car! Each kid got a unique certificate, ribbon, and badge. It was a great day!

After the derby, Z went to a friend’s birthday party and had a sleepover. Hubby and I even went out to dinner just the two of us!

What a great idea and design!

Boys in the den being silly!

Here are what the other cars looked like. Z's was by far the BEST!

Ok, they are still being silly!

Award time!

Good job Z! I am so proud of you!
